Twenty years after beginning life in a small office under the staircase of a family home, International House Manchester is celebrating not only an important anniversary, but also a new chapter in its development as an exclusively adult English language school.

Founded in 2006, IH Manchester has grown from a small idea into a well-established school in the heart of Manchester, known for its warm atmosphere, personal approach and commitment to helping students feel confident both inside and outside the classroom.
The school recently marked its 20th anniversary with a celebration for current and former students, teachers and staff, bringing the IH Manchester community together for cake, bubbly, games, music and karaoke. It was a fitting tribute to two decades of language learning, friendship and international connection.
Reflecting on the school’s journey, Peter Hayes, Director of Marketing at IH Manchester, said:
“I never imagined I’d eventually get to work with so many amazing people. I had a vision of a caring, friendly and welcoming place, a real international house! But, I honestly didn’t know at that stage exactly how that could be done. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, I can confidently say that all my colleagues have made that happen, and for that I’m so grateful every day.
And especially our teachers for their continuous hard work, creative and innovative approach and obvious love they have for helping each one of our students reach their full potential.
Viva International House Manchester and all our students, teachers, agents and colleagues! Let’s celebrate and be proud!”

John O’Leary, Director and School Principle at IH Manchester, added:
“We’ve been absolutely blessed over 20 years to meet such wonderful students and to work with some wonderful staff. A language learning experience is really a special one, and we’ve made countless wonderful memories, and we look forward to making countless more.”
A dedicated environment for adult learners
IH Manchester has recently become an exclusively 18+ school, allowing it to focus fully on the needs, goals and expectations of adult English language learners.
The school’s adult-focused approach means that lessons can be built around practical, real-life language needs, whether students are learning English for work, further study, travel, relocation or personal development. Classroom topics can be more closely connected to adult learners’ experiences, helping students use English in meaningful and relevant situations.
The adult-only environment also supports a more focused learning atmosphere. Students are often learning for personal or professional reasons, and many share similar levels of motivation and purpose. This helps create a classroom dynamic where learners feel comfortable participating, asking questions and building confidence.
For adults returning to study after some time away from the classroom, this supportive setting can make a real difference. Being surrounded by other adult learners helps students feel more relaxed and less self-conscious, particularly when practising speaking skills.
Learning, connection and life in Manchester
Beyond the classroom, the school’s adult social programme gives students the chance to discover Manchester and build international friendships through activities designed specifically for mature learners. These include walking tours, in-school networking events, cinema trips, bowling, escape rooms, restaurant nights, beer tastings, and language and cultural exchange events.
The result is a learning experience that combines serious study with connection, confidence and enjoyment — values that sit closely with IALC’s own belief in language education rooted in quality, community and real human exchange.
IALC warmly congratulates International House Manchester on its 20th anniversary and wishes the school, its students, teachers, staff and partners many more years of success.
