Category: School News60 Years of Quality: Southbourne School of English Celebrates a Remarkable Milestone

Celebrating six decades of excellence, Southbourne School of English stands as a powerful example of a family-run institution that has grown alongside the English language teaching industry itself.
Founded in 1966 by Peter Jennings, the school was born from a passion for travel and international connection. Having served as a Wing Commander during World War II, Jennings developed a deep appreciation for different cultures — a vision that would shape the foundation of the school. Recognising an opportunity in Bournemouth, he established a summer school which soon evolved into a year-round operation as demand for English language courses grew.
The school’s development accelerated in the 1970s when Italo Gallina joined the business. Through tireless international travel and relationship-building — often visiting agents across Europe with brochures, slides, and early promotional materials — he helped position Southbourne as a trusted partner for agencies worldwide. Many of these partnerships, built decades ago, remain strong today.
Over the years, the school has continued to evolve while staying true to its core values. Key milestones include British Council accreditation in 1982, significant campus expansions in 2009 and 2014, and early adoption of classroom technology to enhance the student experience. In 2019, Southbourne achieved a long-standing goal by joining IALC, reinforcing its commitment to quality and international collaboration.
Today, under the leadership of Paul Gallina, the school remains firmly rooted in its family ethos while adapting to a changing global market. Reflecting on the journey in an interview with Study Travel Magazine, Paul Gallina said:
“It’s a wonderful business and industry to be a part of. We’re very fortunate to be able to travel the world and experience different cultures. I’ve made some great friendships along the way, and long may this continue.”
Southbourne’s story is also one of enduring partnerships. Long-standing collaborations with agencies in markets such as Japan and Argentina — some spanning over 35 years — demonstrate the value of trust and personal connection in international education.
Looking ahead, the school continues to navigate an evolving landscape while remaining optimistic about the future. Despite current challenges in the individual student market, its strong group business, global network, and commitment to quality position it well for the years to come.
As Southbourne School of English celebrates its 60th anniversary, it stands not only as a testament to longevity, but as a reflection of the values that define the IALC network: independence, quality, and a personal approach that has shaped its success over six decades.
IALC warmly congratulates Southbourne School of English on this impressive milestone and celebrates its longstanding commitment to excellence in independent language education.
