A grand, living museum, St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most captivating and beautiful cities.
Its decadent architecture of palaces and galleries creates an incomparable magic and has nurtured the inspiration for many a story. Broad avenues are framed with cathedrals, private homes, and small parish churches. Built across forty-two islands, an intricate web of bridges and canals provide low-level views of the skyline and stone embankments are reflected prettily in the icy waters that carve their way through the city.
Visit St Petersburg’s many museums
Ranging from touches of the baroque, neoclassical and rococo, there are many important buildings to see from the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul to the famous Hermitage Museum. The State Hermitage museum, which is mainly housed in the Winter Palace, lives up to its reputation. The collection was started by Catherine the Great and now contains more three million items of Western European art, only a fraction of which are on display in the 360 rooms arranged in five adjoining buildings. It is best to plan ahead and decide what you want to see in advance.
Other highlights include the Russian Museum, home to the biggest collection of Russian art, in the Mikhailovsky Palace which also has a lovely garden. The Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art has 2,000 pieces of Russian art and is particularly strong on late Soviet underground art. The Mariinsky Theatre is also worth visiting, as is Peterhof and, further afield, the Catherine Palace, the summer residence of the Tsars.
For the study of the Russian language, the magnificence of St. Petersburg sets the perfect scene with its rich traditions and extensive history of music, literature and art.
