Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and one of the oldest cities in the world, predating London, Paris, and Rome.
It also contains the longest bridge in Europe, which crosses the Tagus River and is 11 miles long. There are many sites to visit while studying in Lisbon, like the Belem Tower, a monument to the “Age of Discovery” and departure point for the famous Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama, and the Jeronimos Monastery with its wonderful architecture. And lining Lisbon’s historical boulevards are many Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque buildings.
Lisbon contains several districts, each with its own defining features. Alcantara and Bairro Alto are known for their restaurants and stylish bars; Chiado for theatres, museums, cafes, and shopping; Estrela for its gigantic church, the Estrela Basilica. Parque das Nacoes is a new district with a modern, contemporary feel, created during the city renovations for Expo ’98. Visit the Lisbon Oceanarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, famed for its outstanding design which recreates various ocean ecosytems.
