English Language Courses and Camps

Sir Christopher is a summer camp for students aged 16-17. It combines general English teaching with a full programme of interesting activities and excursions. We have been running Sir Christopher for 55 years! The camp is located in central Cambridge where we use the facilities and residences of Ridley Hall and Newnham College. Newnham College is one of the 31 colleges of Cambridge University and Ridley Hall is affiliated with Cambridge University. The location is excellent – just a 5-10-minute walk from the city centre. Sir Christopher has a capacity of up to 100 students at any one time. The average number of students per class is 12 and the maximum class size is 16. This is an ideal centre for 16-17-year-old students looking to enjoy a holiday course with a real taste for Cambridge University life.

Programmes Offered

The camp combines 20 lessons/ 15 hours of English language lessons per week with an interesting programme of activities, local visits and excursions. We adapt our teaching to the learning styles of our students, offering:
  • Multinational classes with students from a range of countries at all levels from beginner to advanced
  • Challenging and motivating lessons
  • Emphasis on speaking, vocabulary and pronunciation
  • Weekly progress testing

Activities

The camp features a variety of activities and local visits. Activity sessions include sports, arts & crafts, local visits, language games and social events. The programme is busy, ensuring there is always lots to do!

Excursions

There is one full-day excursion each Saturday. Destinations include London, Windsor Castle and Warwick Castle. Plenty of sightseeing can be done!

University Discovery theme

Also included is our University Discovery theme which is an opportunity to learn more about the university and traditional Cambridge student life. Themed lesson topics include famous Cambridge students, sporting traditions, scientific discoveries, the university’s unique history, and a comparison of Cambridge with other elite universities around the world. University Discovery activities include guided tours of “hidden” Cambridge, a Cambridge University student presentation about life as a student, mythbusting - true and false myths about Cambridge, Cambridge University treasure hunt and a Cambridge University selfie challenge.

Students on the Sir Christopher course live in the beautiful Ridley Hall or Newnham College residences on campus. Sir Christopher course residences:

  • Central accommodation in comfortable and secure college buildings.
  • Studio staff living on-campus, providing 24-hour supervision.
  • Mostly single bedrooms, with some twin bedrooms.
  • All meals included.
  • Free laundry facilities – students must do their own washing, but at no extra cost.
  • A change of bed linen once per week.
  • Sir Christopher residential bedrooms are at Ridley Hall College or next door at Newnham College.
  • Bathrooms and showers are shared, with some en-suites available at Ridley Hall on request.

Cambridge is a small, safe city, known throughout the world for its mediaeval university colleges, impressive architecture, River Cam and its green parks and gardens.Cambridge has a long tradition, but is also a centre of exciting and innovative scientific research, with key local companies such as Microsoft, Apple and ARM based here.It’s small enough to get around easily on foot or by bike, but big enough to have all the shops, restaurants, cinemas, theatres, clubs, museums, galleries and sports facilities that you need.Attractions not to be missed are punting on the River Cam, the many stunning Cambridge University colleges such as King’s, Trinity, Jesus and St John’s College, Fitzwilliam Museum, University Botanic Garden and Traditional English afternoon tea in Grantchester Meadows.
