- Every autumn, Trieste hosts the Barcolana Regatta, the largest sailing regatta in Europe. During the event, the city comes alive with sailors, visitors and celebrations, while the Gulf of Trieste fills with more than 2,000 boats of every size. It is one of the most exciting and distinctive moments of the year to experience the city.
- One of the most popular excursions from Trieste is a short bus journey from the city centre to Grignano to visit the spectacular Castello di Miramare. Built on a rocky promontory overlooking the Adriatic, the castle appears to rise directly from the sea. Its elegant neo-Gothic style reflects Trieste’s Habsburg heritage more than traditional Italian architecture, as it was originally built for Archduke Maximilian of Austria.
- Swim in the heart of the city centre. Lantern Pier (Pedocin) is a traditional local bathing area famous for its historic wall separating male and female swimmers, a custom that still survives today.
