Located to the north of Miami in Florida, Fort Lauderdale is a wonderful place to live and study English. Take a river boat cruise along the city’s canals and see the waterside homes of some very famous people. Or stroll through the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District and visit the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. On another day, go on a jet skiing adventure, then dine al fresco on delicious seafood. Las Olas Boulevard is a great place to hang out in Fort Lauderdale – it is one of the most architecturally interesting, eclectic and authentic shopping and dining districts in the city.
Living in Fort Lauderdale, you have the beach with its beautiful white sand, crystal clear water and wonderful weather all year round. North of Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach is a good destination for fishing and has off-shore coral reefs that are among the best natural attractions for divers in the area. Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is a 180-acre park along the beach with picnicking areas, camping and nature trails as well as canoes.
Fort Lauderdale’s cultural attractions include the Museum of Discovery and Science and the Fort Lauderdale History Center. The city is also home to the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop – a huge outdoor/indoor flea market – and Sawgrass Mills, an enormous mall and entertainment complex.
Fort Lauderdale has nature too: it is one of the main departure points for wildlife viewing tours and trips to the famous Florida Everglades. An ecosystem consisting of 1.5 million acres of mangroves, sub-tropical forests and creeping grasslands, the Everglades is one of the most fascinating and beautiful national parks in the USA. It is home to 14 rare and endangered species, including the Florida panther, the marine manatee and the American crocodile. And just 25 miles (40 km) away is Miami – an easy round trip.
