Nice was originally named Nike, after the goddess of Victory in Greek mythology. From its Greek origins, the city has accumulated a rich historical and cultural heritage. The best way to explore it is on foot, through the ancient cobblestone streets in Vieux Nice that bind a network of old squares, magnificent buildings, and churches. Place Massena is the main square of the city and is lined with beautiful palm trees and imposing buildings of Italian architecture. It is often used for public events, concerts, and festivals.

Among the highlights are the Musee des Beaux Arts, including works by Monet, Rodin, Sisley, and Degas. The Musee National Marc Chagall is a small museum with the largest public collection of the artist’s works. The Matisse Museum houses a variety of works by the artist, who lived nearby. Also, worth visiting is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral St Nicolas, the largest Russian Orthodox church outside Russia.
