"A perfect little city"
Durham, in North East England, was described by writer Bill Bryson as “a perfect little city”. It is home to majestic Durham Cathedral, widely considered to be the one of the finest examples of Norman church architecture in the UK. The cathedral, Durham Castle and the buildings between them comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is so much for students to discover in and around Durham, making it a fantastic place to learn English in the UK. The city is compact, meaning that many of its attractions are within walking distance. It offers stately homes, historic buildings, museums and galleries. The Gala Theatre presents music, drama and comedy, and hosts the Durham Book Festival as well as the annual Brass Festival.
There is a great range of shops, from Prince Bishops Shopping Centre to lovely independent shops and boutiques, selling antiques, arts and crafts and homegrown local produce. Durham is renowned for its nightlife, and its cocktail bars, gastro pubs and nightclubs are popular with students. The Swan & Three Cygnets pub is a favourite student haunt.
The River Wear flows through the city and the Durham Regatta, known as the “Henley of the North”, is held in June every year. It is an excellent day out for city residents and students. Sport lovers should also visit Durham County Cricket Club. Durham University’s Botanic Garden offers beautiful landscapes to explore and Wharton Park provides spectacular views over the city. Visitors to nearby Hamsterley Forest can enjoy 2,000 hectares of woodland and a variety of activities, including walking, cycling and horse riding. Durham Coast, with its rugged cliffs and stunning views, is known internationally for its rare plants and wildlife.
Durham is friendly and culturally rich, and it promises a wonderful experience for English language students.
