Newcastle is synonymous with industry, nightlife, and football but there is much more to discover in this historic city, making it a great place to learn English in the UK.
Newcastle is a friendly city with a diverse population and ‘Geordies’ have a reputation for strength and wit. The city retains deep-rooted traditions, embodied by the no-nonsense, likeable locals.
The Victorian city centre and quayside areas along the Tyne and across the river in Gateshead are the highlight of the city, as well as the rejuvenated Ouseburn Valley to the east, the gentrified Jesmond to the north, and, on the coast, the surf beaches of Tynemouth.
The city centre is packed with museums, exhibitions and music venues, as well as hip boutiques, fun bars and modern hotels. The city is friendly, safe, low-cost and more than 18 million people visit every year for its culture, sport, shopping and academic reputation.
Newcastle boasts the Angel of the North, Anthony Gormley's iconic angel statue. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Tyne Bridge are two iconic bridges over the River Tyne. The city also has its own Castle, a medieval keep built in the 1100’s and formerly a prison, with views over the city and river.
Students can enjoy many food tours in the city which will give you the chance to take in Newcastle’s rich culture and amazing scenery whilst sampling some of the city’s finest food provided by some of the best independent restaurants in town. Along the way students can also experience the diverse culture scene from the hustle and bustle of the famous Grainger Market where traders still shout their wares, to The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art where students can experience one of the best views of the city.
Have you ever wanted to go on a silent disco adventure? Well now you can, students can join the Silent Adventure Team in the city as they take you on a journey of song and dance through the streets of Newcastle. You will be provided with hi-tech headsets that will fill your body with beats, themed songs and your favourite hits across the decades!
