Founded in 1201, Riga lies on the banks of the Daugava river. Its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site packed with Art Nouveau architecture and medieval buildings such as the 13th-century Riga Dom cathedral, the 14th-century Riga Castle build in 1330, and numerous beautiful merchants’ homes and warehouses.
