Cadiz is a lovely seaside city with a fascinating history that goes back many centuries, brought to life in a city centre packed with historic buildings. Cadiz was settled by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in western civilisation. It was the launching point of Christopher Columbus’s explorations into the New World and today it is one of the leading ports in Spain. With its wide promenades lined with palm trees and its picturesque plazas, it is overflowing with Mediterranean charm. The beach Playa Victoria is considered to be one of the best urban beaches in Europe, with clean sand, beach umbrellas, a sports area and even a movie theatre.

So what can you do when you’re living in Cadiz? First of all, climb the steps to the top of the Torre de Tavira, which is one of the tallest towers in the city. It’s a great place to enjoy the view and get your bearings before you start exploring the rest of Cadiz. Then, head to the Museum of Cadiz where you can learn all about the history of this province. There are lots of interesting exhibits here that will appeal to history buffs, including Phoenician sarcophagi, paintings, fine art and Roman statues.
One of the best places to go to watch the sunset is Playa de la Caleta, which is located between the castles of Santa Catalina and San Sebastian. This beautiful beach has been an inspiration for many musicians and poets and offers stunning views. Take a stroll through the lovely Plaza de las Flores, a scenic plaza that is filled with flower vendors. In this historic, cobbled area of town, you can venture down one of the side streets and try some fried fish and a cold beer at a local restaurant. Then, check out Café Levante, which is located down a narrow side street: it’s a great local café with an arty vibe.
A great place to go exploring in Cadiz is the Barrio del Populo. This is the oldest area of the city and it features beautiful old cobblestone streets, archways and facades. When the sun goes down this historic part of town becomes a great spot for tapas and entertainment, hanging out with new international friends and locals.
Festive all year round!
During festivals, the streets of Cádiz take on added colour, vitality, and music. There are a handful of festivals that take place, but you don’t want to miss the Cádiz Carnival. People come from different parts of the world to witness the Carnival. It is the third-largest festival in the world, next to the Rio de Janeiro and Trinidad carnivals. People dress in fancy costumes and masks; Flamenco and satirical music groups make presentations in city streets and squares. The city is filled with frenetic energy and is bursting with colour and music.
