CES Edinburgh Junior Summer Centre
Experience English and culture in the heart of Scotland’s capital city
Running from the last week of June until the first week in August, CES Edinburgh’s Junior Centre takes place in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town at the James Gillespies’ High School. This modern complex has been purpose built to provide students with the space and atmosphere to relax and enjoy their studies, with spacious classrooms complimented by a large communal annexe and games area.
The central location of the school makes it easy for the dedicated academic and social programmes team to incorporate a range of trips and excursions into the student experience, with trips to Edinburgh’s many museums and castles helping bring the classroom lessons to life.
Programmes offered
The Standard General English Programme offered at CES Edinburgh’s Junior School combines expert English language training with an extensive cultural and social programme that is designed to maximise the student experience both inside and outside of the classroom.
For three hours each morning, students will use all of the four key English language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – as they learn about topics and culture that are important to both the students themselves and the location in which they are studying. At CES there is a strong focus on using English as a tool for communication, and as such our students will learn how to work together in small groups, to develop the confidence to present in front of the class, and to take ownership of their own learning and development.
Our Yellow Shirt social programme team work closely with the teachers and academic staff to ensure that the activities students go out on in the afternoon are tied into the topics they have been learning about in class. We feel the social programme should complement classroom learning, giving students a new perspective on their studies and a passion to go into class the following day wanting to learn more.
For four decades Centre of English Studies has worked hard to balance learning inside and outside of the classroom, and as a result is able to deliver a programme that immerses our students in English in a way that can’t be achieved at home.

For students who are looking for a different option, our residential accommodation at Pollock Halls is within walking distance of the school and allows students to have a little more independence in a safe and secure environment. For older students’ residential accommodation is the perfect way to prepare yourself for university halls.

Exam options
Students who which to study for the IELTS or Cambridge suite of exams are able to take additional classes in the afternoon with our experienced exam preparation teachers.
