A magnificent Victorian spa town in the English county of North Yorkshire, Harrogate is a wonderful place to learn English.
The town of Harrogate developed as a popular spa resort in the 18th Century, when the rich and famous people of Georgian society came to take the waters. It is also home to the famous Betty’s Tea Room, a Yorkshire institution that was founded in Harrogate in 1919 and has branches all across the country. And it’s the place where the mystery of writer Agatha Christie’s disappearance in 1926 was finally solved!
According to one survey, Harrogate is the happiest place to live in Britain. The survey asked 24,000 people how they feel about where they live and the spa town topped the polls in 2015 for the third year in a row. The participants rated their area based on 12 factors, including how safe they felt, neighbourliness, recreational facilities, living costs, sense of community, feeling of contentment and how proud they were of the place they called home.
There are a lot of things to love about Harrogate, whether you like shopping, the great outdoors or good food. The city is filled with beautiful ancient monuments as well as lovely walking tracks, bridle paths and cycle routes. You can ride the longest roller coaster in Britain at Lightwater Valley, hire a boat and glide across the River Nidd at Knaresborough, scramble through How Stean Gorge or trek with llamas!
With so much to enjoy, it soon becomes clear why Harrogate was voted Happiest Place in Britain.
