Carla planting a tree at the orphanage

The motto “We Care” was adopted by Phoenix Academy in 1989 and has been its guiding philosophy ever since. This approach extends beyond the day to day goings on in the school and it is demonstrated through a range of activities throughout the year designed to give support and donations to variety of charitable organisations and causes.

The latest activity involved a whole of school approach to support one of its senior academic staff, Carla Civitella, who was volunteering at a Nepalese orphanage for boys during her vacation. Carla had a target to raise $1000 to take with her to the orphanage to go toward a new solar power system, a cow and trees for the orphanage orchard. The orphan’s plight touched the hearts of staff and students alike and a hive of fund raising activities, including cake stalls, busking, and a jelly bean count competition, occurred over the last two weeks in March to raise a total of $1500 instead. An additional $1000 was added by Phoenix Academy to bring the grand total to $2500.

Carla has since returned from her volunteering and says that the funds contributed by Phoenix Academy and its staff and students, in combination with donations from other volunteers, has enabled the orphanage to purchase the new solar power system, this will give the orphanage a much more reliable power supply than they have had to date and make their daily life a whole lot easier in the process.
