Learn Russian with Passion
The new Liden & Denz Riga school is located in the city centre on Krišjāņa Barona Iela 5 in a recently renovated landmark Art Nouveau building less than 10 minutes walking distance to Vecrīga (Old Medieval Town). Vermane Public Gardens are just around the corner as are a number of coffee shops and bars, and two of the best lunch places in Riga are in the same block. The railway station is 8 min walk away (commuter trains to the seaside), and the tram stop is 100 m away.
Liden & Denz Riga features 7 fully air-conditioned classrooms with a total seating capacity of 68. All classrooms are flooded with natural light. The facilities include a small lounge area plus kitchen. And of course, there is a fast and free Wi-Fi network available
Standard Group Course
This course of 20 lessons per week is available year round, with a weekly intake of new students following a modular pattern of two-week units. The curriculum is built up like a spiral, where each new level of language acquisition starts with the revision of previously studied grammar constructions, logically connected with different speech patterns.
Intensive Group Course
If you choose our Intensive Group Course, you will have 20 morning lessons with students following the Standard Group Course and 5 additional mini-group lessons, taught on two afternoons and offered in 3 different levels:
Combination Courses
These courses combine our standard Group and One-to-One courses with additional, more focused study in a variety of business or cultural fields.
Language Plus
Language Plus module consists of 5 afternoon lessons on Business Russian, run for mini-groups. These modules can be taken year-round but can only be booked in addition to a Group or One-to-One full-time course.
One-to-One Courses
Our One-to-One Courses are designed for students who require a very focused area of study. One-to-one courses are available in varying degrees of intensity: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 lessons per week.
Online courses
Our live, online courses have the same teachers and lesson content as the residential classes in our institutes. These are ideal for pre-Riga revision to ensure you study at the highest possible level for you when you arrive and for post-course follow-up to maintain and continue to improve your Russian.
Host Families:
The advantage of Home stay accommodation option is that you can improve your language skills by communicating with your host family, who are all native-speakers of Russian. Our hosts are all very communicative, patient, understanding and caring. Liden & Denz offers single rooms and 2 meal plans: only breakfast or also breakfast and dinner.
Shared Flats:
If you are looking for a more independent life style and would enjoy sharing with young people, this could be the option for you. We offer flats with 3 or 4 single bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a kitchen with a washing machine. Bed linen is also provided, as is free WiFi. The prices are not higher than for Home stay, but no board is provided. However, self-catering does offer an interesting and economic option.
Over half the population of Riga are Russian native speakers.. 85% of under 35s speak Russian and it is also an asset for native Latvian speakers on the local job market. In this sense Riga can be positively compared to Barcelona in Catalunya, a leading destination for learning Spanish. This makes Riga the only EU capital where you find a natural learning environment for Russian intensive immersion courses. Also a no-hassle destination, safe and, frequently, visa-free (special conditions apply for UK nationals staying over 90 days).
Riga's historic city centre is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and has some of the most beautiful Art Nouveau architecture in Europe. It is renowned throughout Europe as one of the top cultural tourism destinations. The old town Vecriga, the medieval heart of the city, is home to the widely famous Blackheads' House in the town hall square. Just outside the city is Jurmala, a wonderful seaside resort with wide beaches and pretty parklands - a great place to unwind from the busy city centre.
TRKI exam is an official state testing system created in the 1990s to assess foreign students’ command of Russian. Ever since it has been mandatory for international students who aim at being enrolled in Russian universities. The TBU/TEU/TRKI certificates are also widely recognised by major Russian employers and will enhance your CV should you be pursuing a career in Russia. The six levels (ТЭУ, ТБУ, ТРКИ-1, ТРКИ-2, ТРКИ-3, ТРКИ-4) correspond to CEFR. The language skills are tested in all aspects, e.g. Grammar and Vocabulary, Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. TRKI exams are challenging and tend to be more academic than communicative and thus require specific preparation.
We recommend at least 10 individual lessons to prepare for any TRKI exam on top of our standard group classes or other general Russian course. The preparation course includes going over the mock exam with your tutor, eliciting the strong and weak points and targeting the latter. Statistically, the most challenging part of the exam is writing. There are techniques and methods to adjust the student’s language skills to the exam requirements and make a student aware of the exam structure, procedure, and other pragmatic issues.
At the moment, in-house examinations are organised only at the Saint Petersburg school, but can as well be taken online from Moscow or elsewhere.
The team of Liden & Denz Riga has put together exciting city tours and themed excursions for you. Some of the activities are free of charge, others can be booked for a fee. As our language school in Riga is relatively small, excursions are offered on an ad-hoc basis and only on site. However, our travel department will be happy to help you plan and book excursions of one or more days in the Baltic States.
