Mandarin House student Philipp Haas from Switzerland has won the Excellence Award in the Global Times Tongue Twister Contest.

After 20 years of working for the Swiss government, Philipp travelled to China to learn Chinese at Mandarin House. “There is so much going on here, it just feels like the place to be,” he says.

Having gained a strong grounding in Chinese through his studies, Philipp prepared his winning performance in just a few days. “The key was to practice slowly to get the tones right and also color-coordinate each line to keep them in order”, he explains. “I’m also grateful to the patience of the recording staff at Mandarin House. Around the fifth take, I finally got it right.”
