Juan Manuel Sampere – 1955-2011

Quality Language Schools Worldwide

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on 4 March 2011 of our friend, colleague and former president, Juan Manuel Sampere, Chairman of Estudio Sampere SA, after a long illness.

Juan Manuel was the son of Alberto Sampere, founder of IALC. He succeeded his father in the family business, Estudio Sampere SA, developing it by opening Spanish language schools in Alicante and Cuenca, Ecuador, to complement Madrid, Salamanca and El Puerto de Santa Maria.

Juan Manuel also followed his father in serving as IALC President from 1995 to 1999, a period of development and growth for the association. His tenure was characterised by sensitivity, humour and pragmatism on the one hand, and vision, determination and professionalism on the other.

Juan Manuel ‘s gentle personality, warmth and wit made him a much loved figure in the study travel industry. IALC is indebted to this quietly charismatic man, whose contribution to our association was immense and who has left us far too soon.

It is hard to choose a suitable image from the many we have, but this informal picture of Juan Manuel being photographed with his sons at our Cape Town meeting in 2007 captures our friend as we remember him.
