Genki Japanese School is a study abroad school for foreigners who want to learn Japanese in Japan. We have locations in Fukuoka City, in southern Japan, Tokyo,  Kyoto and Nagoya. We specialise in teaching communicative Japanese, and unlike most Japanese language schools, our courses are aimed at speakers of non-kanji using languages. Most of our students speak one of the European languages. You can start any Monday throughout the year, and study for as many weeks as you like! We're the most flexible, fun and rewarding Japanese school in Japan!

All of our Japanese teachers are graduates of a 420-hour Japanese teacher training course at a recognized study institution, and have extensive experience teaching to foreigners; that is why we have students from more than 50 different countries coming to learn Japanese with us each year and many come back again and again!

Programmes offered

​​​​​1. Standard Japanese Course

For people who need to be able to communicate in Japanese, this course offers a heavy emphasis on real-life skills.

Learning Japanese just by reading textbooks and listening to tapes doesn't make you a Japanese language speaker. You will learn common sentence patterns and vocabulary, then use them in practical situations both inside and outside of the classroom. Our course offers a full range of activities that you will find both useful and exciting.

2. Japanese Plus Conversation (Module)

This course builds on the standard course by adding five extra small-group conversational Japanese lesson per week. These lessons focus on some of the interesting aspects of conversational Japanese that it can be hard to cover in the standard classes, such as slang, dialects, specialized vocabulary, and more. All levels welcome.

3. Japanese Plus Culture Activities (Module)

This course builds on the standard course by adding 6 hours of Japanese Traditional and modern cultural activities per week. You will cover activities such as ceramics, tea ceremony, calligraphy, flower arrangement at school, creating your own manga, trying your hand at cosplay, or visiting a maid café. These classes are run on Saturdays

4. Summer Course (under 18s)

It is a special package program offered only during summer. It combines the best, most fun activities of our Cultural Activities module on Saturdays with extra special week days extra-curricular activities., all while taking the standard course Japanese classes. Younger students are sure to love our summer program.

5. 6-months course

This course comes at a big discount off our standard Japanese tuition cost! This special course is one of our most popular items. In most cases, no special visa is required to stay in Japan for up to 6 months.

6. 1-Year/18-Month Student Visa Course (Fukuoka and Nagoya only)

The student visa lets our students to stay in Japan for a year or more! The course is booked and paid in advance for 12/18 months. It comes at a significant discount and allows you to work part-time while you study with us. With 4 intakes a year, you are sure to find the most suitable time for you!

We offer several options for housing that vary slightly depending of the school location you choose: a private or shared room at a student’s dormitory, a private room with a Japanese family, a weekly apartment (contracted with a private company, and similar to a hotel in quality), a private room in a Japanese person’s apartment. When arranging a host family for you, we try to take into account any needs or preferences you may have, such as smoker or non-smoker, allergies, English ability, and so on.

Each accommodation option is very different, so as to offer our students a number of options to ensure that they can find something that would suit them.

Local area

Nagoya is the 3rd largest city of Japan after Tokyo and Osaka, located in the centre of Aichi prefecture, full of history. It is the place that gave birth to the three men who shaped Japan: Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Fast forward a couple of hundred years and another son of Aichi, Kiichiro Toyoda, would start a company that has been shaping our lives for the last century, Toyota Motors, and establish Nagoya as one of the nation’s major manufacturing centers. With a great nightlife, lots of really good restaurants, and too many places to visit, you’re sure to have a great time in Nagoya.

Conveniently situated midway between Tokyo and Osaka, Nagoya offers great opportunity for travel to all parts of Japan. Study Japanese here and you will not only learn the language but also feel Japan's spirit.

Exam options

At the end of each course section or level, the students will have an exam in order to determine if it is possible to move forward to the higher levels. To pass those exams, the score must be at least 70%. When the students finish their course, they receive a certificate stating the highest-class level reached.

We do not offer specific JLPT exam preparation courses, however we do study all the necessary topics and we can provide JLPT mock exams together with exam enrolment assistance and in the case of the 1 year/18-Month student visa courses our students have to pass at least once the JLPT test during their study with us (fees covered by the school).

Bildungsurlaub recognized 2 weeks program are also available for workers in Germany.

Many universities also offer course credit for Japanese study with us. We can generally meet most reporting requirements that universities have including study grades transcripts and class attendance reports.

We have also a School of Record in the US to facilitate Credit recognition for American students.
