English in Totnes interview with Managing Director, Margie Barker

Based in South Devon's picturesque countryside, lies the beautiful historic town of Totnes. Since 1980, English in Totnes has offered a range of English courses for individuals and groups from 4 years upwards.

In an interview with Margie Barker, the school's Managing Director shares why Totnes is such a special place to learn English.

Q: How does it feel to be part of this exclusive group of quality language schools? We are very pleased to be a part of such an interesting and diverse group of language centres and I look forward to meeting more of my colleagues around the world in future meetings of IALC.

Q: How has 2018 been for English in Totnes? We've had a busy and successful year with an increase in our ministay and Cultural Experience bookings.

Q: You were established in 1980. How have things changed at the school since then? The school has changed from being a cooperative run by teachers, to a family-run independent school. Since I've been here (1998), the school has grown from being a small mainly adult and Swiss school to a multicultural school with students from 4 years upwards.

Q: What are your main aims for English in Totnes? To grow our Cultural Experience course as a market leader and to keep having very satisfied customers on our personalised ministay group courses.

Q: Which countries do the majority of your students come from? This varies depending on the time of year. We welcome students from Spain, Italy, Germany and Saudi Arabia to name a few.

Q: What is special about Totnes? Totnes was the first transition town and its environmental focus makes any visit to Totnes memorable. Nestled between the rugged beauty of Dartmoor and the beautiful coast, it's an excellent base for exploring Devon.

Q: What are the most popular student activities? We offer a great range of activities for our students. Our adults love our truly Totnes activities such as tarot reading, massage and walks to Sharpham vineyard to taste our local wine and cheese, and our younger students enjoy surfing at Bigbury, cinema nights at Totnes cinema and our famous Friday night Civic Hall discos.

Q: Moving on to find out more about you, which is your favourite travel destination? I love travelling and since running the school since 1998, I've had the chance to travel throughout the world, including the far east, Latin America and Europe- and I've loved it all!

Q: Your favourite pastime? When I'm not travelling, I like walking my dog, doing pub quizzes and seeing my family and friends.

Q: Your favourite song? Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms

Q: Your favourite meal? It depends on the country I'm in and the season.

Q: Your dream dinner guests? Stephen Fry, David Attenborough, Princess Anne and Victoria Beckham.

Q: Finally, what would you say are the main benefits of learning at English in Totnes? Learning English in a small town with everything within walking distance- host families, social activities and the school- means that you don't waste time travelling to and from the school and you can get to know local English people easily and naturally. This makes improving your English an easy and comfortable process among friends!
