Accademia Italiana Celebrates Multilingualism at 10th European Day of Languages

23 September 2011 was the 10th anniversary of the European Day of Languages (EDL), an educational event taking place in Salerno, Italy, supported by the European Parliament, European Commission and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The EDL aims to raise awareness of multilingualism in European and extra EU multi-ethnic contexts. This year’s program consisted of a conference at the City Hall Building, followed by a language laboratory at the Accademia Italiana language centre.

Among the conference speakers were the vice president of European Parliament, Gianni Pittella; Senator Alfonso Andria; the head of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research Maurizio Piscitelli; and the linguist professor Emilio D’Agostino. The conference was opened by Professor Abdoul Touhami, anthropologist at the University of Sousse, Tunisia and Sorbonne University in France.

During the language laboratory, classes were held simultaneously in nine languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Italian and, for the first time, Arabic and Bulgarian. Alexandra Borges de Sousa, IALC President and Director of CIAL Centro de Linguas, also took part event via videoconference.

More than 150 participants and students attended the event and the day ended with the awarding of 14 two-week scholarships for language courses abroad. IALC schools who contributed a scholarship were: Malaca Instituto - Malaga, Frances King School of English - London, GLS Sprachzentrum - Berlin, Academia Columbus -Mexico and Costa Rica, Escuela de Idiomas Nerja, BWS Germanlingua - Berlin and Munich and Accademia Italiana - Salerno.
