Quality Language Schools Worldwide

Malaca Instituto’s first ever student has returned to the Spanish language school in Malaga 39 years after his first class. Now 71, Paul Jaquay was one of four foreigners in Malaga in 1971 who inspired current school owner Ida Willadsen and her then husband, Joaquin, to open a language school and teach Spanish. The four students received classes, friendship and an insight into Spanish life as they helped to prepare the school building, and Paul still treasures the guitar the couple gave him as thanks.

Paul and Ida had much to talk about, including memories of the Franco period, the Guardia Civil and constant vigilance. They revisited the area where the students lived, which they called “Rattlesnake Hill” due to its primitive appearance, and recalled the meals cooked by la Señora Carmen for 125 Pesetas (0.75 Euros) and time passed on the beach and at parties at la Paloma and Pino Rojo. Ida recalls the school almost closing in the early days, but the hard work and devotion of its owner and staff have seen it become one of Spain’s best known Spanish language schools.
