Study English in Honolulu, a beautiful Hawaiian city

The name Honolulu means “sheltered harbour” or “calm port”. The city has been the capital of the Hawaiian Islands since 1845. It is very high in rankings of the best cities to live in the world, and has been ranked as the second safest city in the USA. It is also the most remote major city in the world.

When you live and learn English in Honolulu, you never run out of things to do. You could go for a canoe ride, watch the sunset from Waikiki Beach, go snorkelling in Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve, or visit some of the most historic places in Hawaii including Pearl Harbour and Iolani Palace.

It’s also easy to leave the city at any time and explore some of the more remote and beautiful areas of Hawaii. The year-round tropical weather means that you can lead an active outdoor lifestyle all the time, including jogging at Ala Moana Beach Park or on the scenic route at Diamond Head.

Enjoy Honolulu as you improve your English

Honolulu is located on Oahu, which is the tourist centre of the Hawaiian Islands. One of the most famous attractions here is Waikiki Beach, with its white sand, surfers and sunbathers. It is a great place for swimming, catamarans and outrigger canoes. You can learn to surf during your time in Honolulu at one of the many great surfing schools and there are also opportunities for scuba diving, snorkelling and other water sports.

If you want to escape the crowds and experience a calmer beach, go to the west near Downtown where you’ll find Ala Moana Park. This is a beautiful green space that has plenty of trees and grass as well as a quiet sandy beach.

While you are in Honolulu, take the opportunity to visit the various military memorials, such as Pearl Harbour, scene of the famous World War II battle, and the USS Arizona Memorial. Honolulu also has many excellent museums, including the Bishop Museum, the Mission Houses Museum, the Hawaii State Art Museum and the Iolani Palace. You can also check out the Contemporary Museum, Queen Emma’s Summer Palace and the Honolulu Academy of the Arts.

Honolulu has a lively arts and culture scene too – from Waikiki Beach to Downtown and Chinatown, there are many excellent clubs, bars, theatres and other entertainment to enjoy. To experience the best of Chinatown nightlife, visit on the first Friday of the month for the art celebration, when the downtown streets buzz with activity. The Diamond Head Theatre has been giving Broadway-style performances since 1919 and has been called the “Broadway of the Pacific.” Check it out and enjoy the show!
