Sydney in Australia is one of the most diverse, multicultural and vibrant cities in the world.

It is also blessed with natural beauty, from the sandy beaches and surf of Bondi and Manly to the wild bushland and ruggedness of the world-heritage Blue Mountains, just one hour away.

Sydney is the oldest non-indigenous city in Australia, where the first of the European fleet of ships landed in 1788 to set up the colony of New South Wales. The ships met land at Sydney Harbour, today a stunning waterfront with botanical gardens, art museums, the cobbled streets, quaint shops and markets of the Rocks, and the world-famous landmarks of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

The Opera House was the result of a architectural competition won by Jern Utzon Dane, who produced a startling non-conformist structure of nine ‘shells’ which radiate from the centre, the inspiration taken from the slices of an orange. These shells make up the five halls which house the performance areas.

There are many public and private galleries throughout the city. The Art Gallery of NSW hosts major international touring exhibitions as well as being home to classic Australian paintings and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art. Other galleries include the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Ken Done Gallery.

Students learning English in Sydney can immerse themselves in this flamboyant city, which likes to celebrate with many festivals throughout the year.

Sydney has a full calendar of events including the highly regarded Sydney Film Festival, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race when the harbour is filled with hundreds of boats and Australia Day celebrations. From the Sydney Festival, Australia’s biggest arts festival, to the colourful Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney welcomes everyone to join its parties.

Australians love their sport and Sydney plays host to some of the biggest international and domestic sporting events, including the Australian Open tennis and golf tournaments, and test cricket.

Australia is famous for its outdoor life and in and around Sydney there are countless activities on offer, including scuba diving, surfing, bungee-jumping, kayaking, horse-riding, golf and more. Picnics and barbecues are part of daily life, and once the sun has set, why not visit Sydney’s famed nightspots in the Kings Cross, Oxford Street and Darling Harbour areas, which are teaming with bars and people of many nationalities and ages.
