11 Mai 2011

Quality Language Schools Worldwide

One of IALC’s longest standing members, Escuela de Idiomas “Nerja”, is a language school set in a very picturesque location on the Costa Del Sol, offering the ideal place to learn Spanish in Spain and enjoy the many local activities and Mediterranean lifestyle outside of study hours.

We spoke to school director Luis Carrion to find out more about the school, life in Spain and what it is like being part of the “IALC family”.

Q: Hello Luis, how does it feel to be a member of this exclusive group of quality language schools?

A: I joined IALC 20 years ago and have taken part in all the annual IALC Workshops, which says it all, I love it! I summarise my feelings on IALC in three words: Professionalism, friendships and progress.

Q: How has 2011 been for the school so far and do you think this year will be worse, the same or better than last year?

A: This year is going well, and a little better than 2010. The signs are looking good for the rest of the year and I believe we will continue this trend.

Q: You were established in 1980. How have things changed at the school since then?

A: There have been a lot of changes: the size, buildings and new facilities for students. The school has grown based on effort, ideas, belief and goals. We started teaching Spanish in just one classroom. Now we have 3 fully equipped buildings.

Q: What are your main aims for Escuela de Idiomas “Nerja”?

A: To teach the Spanish language and culture. Share our customs and way of life with the students in an ideal seaside resort.

Q: From which countries do the majority of your students come?

A: The three main nationalities are German, British and American, followed by Swiss, Scandinavian and Dutch.

Q: What are the most popular student activities?

A: Students enjoy very much our full day excursions on Saturdays to the Andalusian cities of Malaga, Granada and Cordoba. Adults love the cookery lessons held in the school garden and the wine tasting seminars. Younger pupils like to volleyball, kayak and take salsa lessons.

Q: What are the biggest attractions for students wishing to study Spanish in Spain?

A: Spain is a country of huge contrasts in landscape and culture, which are beautiful from North to South. History, traditions and customs are all united by the friendly character of the Spanish people. Because of this students receive a very personal, life enhancing and unforgettable experience.

Q: What would you say are the biggest challenges facing your school and language study in Spain?

A: For our school it is maintaining the high quality level and good name in the marketplace. This can only be done by giving a personal service and embracing innovation.

Q: Moving on to find out more about you, which is your favourite city in the world and why?

A: My favourite city is……Nerja! I live very close to countryside, the sea and have the beauty of Andalucia. I have never found anywhere else that offers such a good quality of life.

Q: Your favourite pastime or interest?

A: I have many but my favourites are photography, swimming, my daily morning walk at the beach and bio-agriculture.

Q: Your favourite meal?

A: Fritura malagueña – a dish of many types of local fish that are fried

Q: Your dream dinner guests?

A: Simply my friends (I have lots!) and my dear family: Renate, Andreas and Mar.

Q: Finally, what would you say are the main benefits of learning Spanish in your school in Nerja?

A: The reassurance that students will learn and be able to speak Spanish. And having fun at a school with a fabulous ambience and special Andalucian atmosphere.
