A replica of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue is standing 14.5ft high and 13ft wide on the rooftop of Galway Business School, after being unveiled by Galway City Mayor Hildegarde Naughton on June 22. It has been erected in the Salthill area of Galway as part of the Volvo Ocean Race festivities and Salthill Festival.

The statue provides a cornerstone to the dedicated Brazil Day celebrations on 2 July as part of the Salthill Festival and the Volvo Ocean Race Grand Finale. International students at Galway Cultural Institute and Galway Business School will experience Galway’s legendary festival atmosphere as a week of events take place from Saturday 30 June - Sunday 8 July. Monday 2 July is Brazil Day and Tuesday 3 July is China Day.

The Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is thought to be the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus. The white marble replica was carved with a chainsaw in a secret location in Tonabrucky by famous sculptor MacDaragh Lambe, who joined Galway’s Artist in Residence Margaret Nolan and Savage Creative director Brendan Savage to create the replica of Brazil’s and Rio de Janeiro’s most famous statue.
