Quality language schools worldwide

Melton College, York: Interview with Andrew Hjort

28/02/2013

Melton College, the oldest language school in the North or England was established in 1963.

We chat to school director Andrew Hjort to find out more about Melton College and how it feels to be part of IALC.

Q: Hello Andrew, when did you join IALC and why?
We joined in 2005. I spoke to some of my friends, whose schools were already members. They said IALC was worth joining – they were right!

Q: How does it feel to be part of this exclusive global community of quality language schools?
There is a dimension to IALC that is certainly different to other membership organisations. It is fascinating to compare notes with schools teaching English thousands of miles away and, of course, schools teaching other languages as well.

Q: How is 2012 going for you and how does it compare with last year?
Very well so far!

Q: Melton College, York was established in 1963. How have things changed at the school since then?
In some ways, a lot. Back then there were almost no materials. Technology was different - for example, we were very proud of our first reel-to-reel tape recorder! Now we have interactive whiteboards in all our main classrooms. However, in some ways things are the same, we are still a small school, we still put a lot of emphasis on individual attention and we still see introducing students to York and the UK as a significant part of what we do.

Q: What are your main aims for Melton College?
Our main aim is to continue doing what we do as well as we can

Q: Where do the majority of your students come from?
Most of our students are European. Our two biggest markets are Germany and Italy

Q: What are your most popular student activities?
The younger students love bowling, barbecues and events in the city – anything near shops! Older students like exploring the pubs and visiting some of York’s many world-famous attractions.

Q: Moving on to you, which is your own favourite travel destination?
In my spare time I work as a ski coach so anywhere with snow.

Q: Your favourite pastime?
Skiing, but I also climb and enjoy hill walking

Q: Your favourite meal?
England has a rich food heritage so it is a difficult choice. Steak and kidney pie followed by some local cheese washed down with Yorkshire beer would be hard to beat.

Q: Your dream dinner guest(s)?
My family

Q: Finally, what would you say are the main benefits of learning English at Melton College?
The idea if learning a language where it is spoken is central to IALC and is central to what we do. We are lucky enough to be based in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with a relatively small concentration of language schools. Real English, real England.

Melton College offers courses and exams for all ages.
