ALCE Accademia Lingue e Culture Europee

Interview with ALCE co-director Luca Armaroli in the lead up to the IALC 2018 Workshop

IALC accredited language school ALCE shall host the IALC 2018 Workshop in Bologna from 19 – 22 April 2018.

Established in 1999, ALCE is a family-run school that provides students with a comprehensive educational and cultural experience within a friendly environment.

With an annual presence of around 80,000 university students, good cuisine and home to the oldest European University, La Dotta; Bologna is a city that ALCE is proud to share with the rest of the world.

In an interview with Luca Armaroli, in the lead up to the 2018 IALC Workshop, the school’s co-director shares his enthusiasm for hosting the workshop in Bologna and reflects on his career.

How was the idea of opening your school?

The merit and the idea were my wife Rossana. If 18 years ago I was asked to imagine my future, I would never have thought that I would be the co-director of an Italian language school in Bologna. In fact, I was the lawyer. But I come from a classical training and I've always had a great passion for languages, travel and our beautiful culture. Again, my wife is the crazy start of a project that has grown year after year, and to which I joined with enthusiasm.

What was the greatest satisfaction you had with your school?

I find myself fortunate because we have had many moments of growth and recognition. Certainly the biggest satisfaction came this year, when the IALC President delivered the fateful phrase: And the 2018 IALC (International Association of Language Centers) workshop goes toooooo ... Bologna".

I took two days to realize that it was all true. I believe there is no greater satisfaction in the world for a Bolognese, born and raised in Bologna, to bring his city to the attention of the world. To bring the next IALC Workshop in Bologna is really the highest and most challenging achievement we have achieved.

What does it mean to organize an IALC workshop?

In the months prior to the event, it is a matter of impeccably coordinating the work started years ago, with a careful selection of all details: the choice of hotels and places of welcome, the organization of evening events, the perfecting of the variety of menus, and the management of all event logistics.

The IALC workshop will bring more than 250 people to Bologna and to offer them a unique showcase and memorable experience, we selected three of the most fascinating historic buildings in Bologna. Our guests will surely be impressed by the elegant closing dinner in the frame of Palazzo Re Enzo, overlooking the Piazza Maggiore and Neptune.

Really a challenging job. What do you like most about your job?

Despite the efforts, fatigue and adversity, I think it is a privilege to work in a stimulating, dynamic and multinational environment such as language schools. Being part of national sector organizations such as ASILS and international like IALC leads you to exchanges of constructive and fulfilling opinions, practices and information with colleagues from all over Italy and around the world. Priceless.

With all these commitments can you still get in touch with the students?

The nature and size of our school are such that we can almost get to know every student who goes from here. One by one, by name and with its specifics. I can say that I am honoured to have had hundreds of students and have seen them take different paths and paths of success.

What are your projects for the future?

I would like to open a second home in Puglia. We fell in love with that part of Italy and it would be nice to have a new ALCE in the South to meet the temporal and personal needs of a different range of customers. We'll see.
