Progress for COLC’s Environmental Project

The first crop of Kauri trees grown from seed in COLC’s native plant nursery are now well established. The seeds were collected from local Kauri trees in March, and will continue to be looked after by our students, in the school’s nursery for the next three years.
Once the trees are large enough they will be planted back into the local environment, again by our students. "It is the aim of the school to grow and plant one Kauri tree for every student that comes to our school." explains Kim Lawry, director of Coromandel Outdoor Language Centre.

The whole project is about growing native New Zealand plants that will eventually be used to plant streams and riverbanks in this area with the long term aim of increasing water quality in the local harbour, and in Mercury Bay.

The school has received funding from the Fonterra Grassroots Foundation, and this has allowed them to move a little faster than initially planned. Local businesses and organisations are showing an interest in this environmental project and their support is expected to increase as more plants being established.

Students can volunteer to get involved in the project and visits to the nursery will sometimes be included in the school’s activity program. Seed gathering, propagating, re-potting and eventually planting are all things our students can experience, while doing something to help both our community and our environment.
