Quality language schools worldwide

BWS Germanlingua: Interview with Florian Meierhofer

17/01/2013

BWS Germanlingua has German language schools in Berlin and Munich. The schools are centrally located in historic buildings and offer a good choice of courses, accommodation and activities.

We chat to school owner and IALC Vice President of Membership, Florian Meierhofer, to find out more about BWS Germanlingua and how it feels to be part of IALC.

Q: Hello Florian, when did you join IALC and why?
I don’t know exactly when BWS Germanlingua joined IALC. When I took over the school, it was already in IALC and I have been the lucky one who didn’t have to go through the selective application procedure.

Q: How does it feel to be part of this exclusive global community of quality language schools?
It is just great! The advantages are enormous. Even if I was quite sceptical at the beginning, during my IALC time I’ve got to know very remarkable people from schools and from agencies who are very open-minded and helpful. Not to forget the high-quality IALC workshop every year, which supports my schools with precious contacts.

Q: How is 2012 going for you and how does it compare with last year?
2012 was an excellent year for us and this seems to be the same for a majority of German schools. We think that the strong economy in Germany during the crisis in the world motivates young people to learn our language.

Q: BWS Germanlingua was established in 1984. How have things changed at the school since then?
In 1984 there was only the Munich school. I took over in the year 2000 and since then many things have changed: we have more or less tripled our student numbers, have moved to very nice and centrally located facilities, have bought apartments to accommodate students and, last but not least, opened our Berlin school in the year 2003.

Q: What are your main aims for BWS Germanlingua ?
We aim to offer more and more quality by being more selective with homestays and with teachers, by investing in new techniques in the classroom and by giving a lot of attention to our students’ feedback. We don’t aim to grow bigger and bigger, as we’d like to keep the intimate atmosphere at our schools.

Q: Where do the majority of your students come from?
Most of them come from Switzerland, where German is the most important language. French Swiss and Italian Swiss therefore need a good level of German, if they want to have a good job.

Q: What are your most popular student activities?
The simplest is the most popular: a social evening at a bar! But also our week-end excursions to the sights and cities around are very much liked.

Q: Moving on to you, which is your own favourite travel destination?
Italy. I love the language, the people, the landscape and the food there.

Q: Your favourite pastime?
Singing.

Q: Your favourite meal?
All different kinds of pasta.

Q: Your dream dinner guest(s)?
Edita Gruberova.

Q: Finally, what would you say are the main benefits of learning German at BWS Germanlingua?
Serious learning combined with a lot of fun in an intimate atmosphere.

BWS Germanlingua offers effective German teaching with an excellent nationality mix. We give immediate response to enquiries, individual support and advice for all kinds of questions.
