SACE Community Connections encourage cultural exchange in Tasmania

12/01/2005

The Community Connections programme first launched by SACE Tasmanian College of English in Hobart in 1998 goes from strength to strength. The programme forms an essential part of the College's core learning programme and involves all students in local community activities. Community Connections is a positive and valuable experience for both students and the people of Hobart people, who appreciate the cultural exchange with their international visitors.

Activities vary, but all feature interaction with the local community. Recently, international students from the English language college spent time at a local primary school, teaching the young students about customs and traditions from their own countries. As a result, the Australian children learnt some Swiss-German, sang a Korean song and discovered how to use chopsticks.

The Tasmanian College of English also runs a Landcare programme. Students do some classroom preparation before going out to work on a local nature conservation project. With help from the Hobart City Council, the students carry out tasks ranging from weeding and planting to restoring native vegetation, water testing and bird watching. After the success of the Landcare programme, the Tasmanian College of English introduced a one-week volunteer work programme with local conservation projects for students who have completed their English course.
