Learn English - English language courses in Oxford

Home to the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a major attraction for international students who want to learn a language in an educational hub.

It is a quintessentially English city, with its roots stretching back to the 10th century.

Oxford’s rich historic architecture includes the iconic Radcliffe Camera, an 18th century circular building that houses the main reading room of the famous Bodleian Library, and Christ Church Cathedral, part of Christ Church College, one of 38 colleges forming the University of Oxford. The city’s central location in England gave it geographical prominence and Oxford gained a royal charter by King Henry II, granting its citizens the same privileges and exemptions as those enjoyed by the capital of the kingdom, London.

With such history on tap, students learning English at an IALC school in Oxford have countless museums, galleries and exhibitions to visit in their spare time. The Ashmolean Museum is Britain’s oldest public museum.  Established in 1683, it houses a diverse collection, including Egyptian mummies and Islamic art. The University and Pitt Rivers Museums are also worth visiting.  The former houses more than five million natural history exhibits in a magnificent Victorian Gothic building.  The Pitt Rivers Museum is one of the world’s finest collections of anthropology and archaeology.

The city is also blessed with immaculately kept open spaces, including the University Park and the University of Oxford Botanic Garden - both ideal for picnics and pleasant walks.

There is a wide range of sport and leisure activities in Oxford, including archery, football, tennis, rugby and skating.

The city is virtually flat, so cycling is an ideal way to get around.  The river Thames runs through Oxford and punting, canoeing, rowing and sailing are also available.

As a university city, Oxford provides extensive year-round student entertainment, from music festivals to drama performances and comedy clubs. The pedestrianised city centre has a wide variety of shops, cafés and restaurants and a bustling night scene, particularly on “student nights”. It is not uncommon to see bars and clubs with long queues outside.

Oxford is capital of the county of Oxfordshire, which is renowned for its quaint villages and rolling countryside. Popular day trips include Blenheim Palace for its famous architecture and pristine gardens, Bicester Village for serious shoppers and the picturesque Cotswolds for a romantic getaway.

Nestling in the heart of England, Oxford is an ideal place to learn English and enjoy a ready-made student lifestyle.
